Ronin is a Japanese word that was used during Japan's feudal period (1185-1868) to label a samurai who was without a lord or master. The word ronin literally means "wave man," an idiomatic expression that means "vagrant" or "wandering man." In other words, it is a man without a home--a drifter.
The Ronin Martial Arts Society was formed for those who find themselves adrift within the martial arts world. These individuals may have lost their teacher for whatever reason, or simply find themselves without a teacher due to constant relocations or lack of availability. Even many teachers of the martial arts find themselves wandering, as they constantly share their knowledge, but have few people from which to draw knowledge from.
The RMAS is a brotherhood of like-minded martial artists who are dedicated to the advancement of the martial arts through the open exchange of information. RMAS does not endorse or promote any martial arts system, school, or instructor. It is designed to be free from the politics that plague many of the organizations that exist today.
RMAS was developed to be a clearinghouse to unite martial artists within relatively close geographical locations for the purpose of meeting together periodically to train and share their knowledge with each other, regardless of their experience levels, ranks, systems, or school affiliations. All training conducted under the RMAS banner is free of charge and open to all members. The purpose of the society is not to draw students away from their teachers, but to encourage students and teachers alike to put aside whatever stylistic or organizational differences they have and come together on a regular basis to share their knowledge with one another.
